Reading batch documents.
How to connect a certificate of analysis to the material in front of you, and what to check next.
Match the product and batch identifiers
A batch or lot identifier connects a material to its documentation. Start by comparing the product name, product number and lot on the container with the document. A report for a different lot does not describe the material you have.
Read the reported methods and results
Look for the issuing organisation, date, test methods, units, results and any stated specifications. Keep the original document, rather than relying on a cropped image or a single headline figure.
Ask for clarification if the method, reported unit or acceptance criterion is unclear. A certificate should be read as a record of its stated tests, within their stated scope.
Check the scope of the report
A result for one characteristic does not answer every question about a material. Review the complete specification and supporting safety information for the planned research application. Do not assume that an unreported characteristic has been tested.
Batch documents for this catalogue
